Nanxi Zeng

Welcome! I am a postdoctoral fellow for Global Perspectives on Society at New York University Shanghai.

With a regional concentration on China and East Asia, my research and teaching focus on urban governance, the political economy of development, and political ethnography.

I hold degrees in Political Science (PhD) from Johns Hopkins University, International Relations (MA) from the University of Chicago, and Journalism (BA) from Renmin University of China.

I am working on a book project, Frames of Welfare: The Rise of the Housing Welfare State in Post-Socialist China, which uses housing welfare as an example to interrogate the redistributive politics in urban processes.

While my research analyzes a range of state apparatuses including housing welfare, the judiciary system, and the citizenship institution, they are unified under one theoretical question, that is, how states negotiate the enduring tension between accumulation and legitimation.

My research has been supported by the Social Science Research Council (IDRF), the Japan Foundation, and the 21st Century Cities Initiative, among others.
